I never considered myself a dancer. If you met me a few years ago, you would’ve seen an aspiring academic and a certified klutz, whose idea of spending a free Saturday was visiting the library and editing old college research papers. Add to that a paranoid fear of making a fool out of myself, and that pretty much guaranteed that I’d never set foot inside a dance studio. Dance was for people, who were coordinated, graceful, had balance and musicality. Academics weren’t meant to dance. Until a friend (a former dancer) dared me to try something that “didn’t involve thumbing old dusty books.” She coaxed me into taking a dance class claiming it would restore vitality and health to my pale and weakening physique.

First class was nothing short of terrifying. I had no idea that the human body was capable of defying the laws of physics. After countless shimmies, many frustrating hip drops, and hours of chest lifts, it dawned on me that the human body was perfectly capable of following the laws of nature. That’s belly dancing—to follow the natural movements of your body. It’s not just about the music, the steps or the routines. It’s about a feeling, a sense of freedom, a connection with something primal yet graceful; it’s about a movement of energy that’s truly beautiful.
